MCAT Tutor Tell All MCAT 2013, 2014, and 2015 - What changed

For years, countless prospective medical students have taken the MCAT in the hopes of improving their chances for medical school admissions or MD/PhD admissions. This year, the MCAT underwent a small change which altered the layout of the test. In this post, I (an MCAT tutor) will give you some background on the history of the test, how and why it's changed, and what that means for your preparation. Let's look at the history of the test: In the 1920s, dropout rates from US medical schools rose. In an attempt to ensure that students entering medical school were really prepared, the physician F.A. Moss and colleagues developed an exam, the â€Å"Scholastic Aptitude Test for Medical Students†. This first exam focused on visual memory, scientific vocabulary and definitions, as well as logical reasoning. In the time between 1956-1962, the test became a lot simpler: It contained only four sections: verbal ability, quantitative ability, science achievement, and understanding modern society. It became a multiple choice exam (thank goodness!). Scores ranged from 200-800. The section "understanding modern society" wasn’t taken to be that important, but the rationale behind it was that this would give those who had a more liberal arts education an advantage. Between 1977-1991, several more changes occurred.The general information section was removed, and the test began to look a lot more like it does today, focusing more on science and cognitive skills. In 1992, the test became what it is today. But as this exam has had multiple incarnations over the years, it was only a matter of time before they changed it again! The 2013 exam will completely remove the essay writing section, and there will be a new trial section in its place. What exactly is in this trail section, you may asK? Well, for the 2013 exam, here’s what you need to know about the trial section as you dive into standardized test preparation. First of all, it DOESN†T count towards your score It will be the last section of the test day and takes about 45 minutes It will consist of 32 questions in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, and physics OR it will be 32 questions in psychology, sociology, and biology. You may ask, why are they even including a trial section this year? Well, it all has to do with what the exam will look like in 2015. Rather than having the physical sciences, biological sciences, verbal reasoning, and a trial section, the new exam will have four new sections: Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological System Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills While the names of the sections have changed, they still test the same basic concepts, except with a bit more focus on analysis and reasoning. The biggest concern for most test takers is the new Psychological, Social, and Biological foundations section. The purpose of this section is really there to test your knowledge of â€Å"the ways in which psychological, social, and biological factors influence perceptions and reactions to the world; behavior, and behavior change; what people think about themselves and others; the cultural and social differences that influence well-being; and the relationships between social stratification, access to resources, and well-being†. So, what do you need in order to be prepared for this section? The AAMC suggests that you should have 1 semester of introductory psychology, 1 semester of introductory sociology and two semesters of introductory biology. The great thing about this new section is that, as with the rest of the exam, there is a more of a focus on analyzing data and experiments, which means that the base knowledge you need to answer these questions is minimal. Its really about understanding and interpreting primary scientific data. For more information about the types of questions take a look at the AAMC website. Overall the exam seems like it's in for a big change. This change, however, should not provoke too much anxiety. With the new emphasis on scientific inquiry and reasoning, you should expect more questions focused on the analysis of graphs and charts. Before beginning this course, I would not have described myself as politically active. In fact, I would call myself even frustrated with politics. In viewing and reading some of the ridiculous displays of political figures and candidates on multiple sides of the political fence, I have even developed an attitude of political avoidance. My response to this frustration would be to turn off the media broadcasts, close out of social media, or walk away from conversations when the topic either didn’t make sense or didn t support my personal, professional, or moral convictions. Politics, policies, and political figures seemed to be more of a stumbling block than a stepping stone and a barrier separating communities and individuals from well being. The main reason for this avoidance is the pattern I have seen in American politics even at the local level of ignoring the issues and problems and mud slinging to achieve political gain. However, upon considering examples of how nurses can and have impacted public policy, I am beginning to see areas where I am and have been an impact without even realizing it because I was ignorant about politics and public policy as it applies to the nursing profession. According to Mason, Gardner, Outlaw, and O’Grady (2016), â€Å"It is simply not possible to succeed in any decision-making arena by ignoring the political realm†(p.16). Amelia Jenks Bloomer, an editor, and writer advocating for women’s rights  and temperance is known as a promoter of dress reform.  Bloomers are named for her reform efforts.  She lived from  May 27, 1818, to December 30, 1894. Early Years Amelia Jenks was born in Homer, New York. Her father, Ananias Jenks, was a clothier, and her mother was Lucy Webb Jenks.  She attended public school there. At seventeen, she became a teacher.  In 1836, she moved to Waterloo, New York, to serve as a tutor and governess. Marriage and Activism She married in 1840. Her husband, Dexter C. Bloomer, was an attorney. Following the model of others including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the couple did not include the wife’s promise to obey in the marriage ceremony. They moved to Seneca Falls, New York, and he became the editor of the Seneca County Courier. Amelia began writing for several local papers.  Dexter Bloomer became the postmaster of Seneca Falls, and Amelia served as his assistant. Amelia became more active in the temperance movement.  She also was interested in women’s rights and participated in the 1848 woman’s rights convention in her home town of Seneca Falls. The following year, Amelia Bloomer founded a temperance newspaper of her own, the Lily, to give women in the temperance movement a voice, without the domination of men in most temperance groups.  The paper started out as an eight-page monthly. Amelia Bloomer wrote most of the articles in the Lily.  Other activists including Elizabeth Cady Stanton also contributed articles.  Bloomer was considerably less radical in her support of women’s suffrage than her friend Stanton was, believing that women must â€Å"gradually prepare the way for such a step† by their own actions. She also insisted that advocating for temperance not take a back seat to advocate for the vote. The Bloomer Costume Amelia Bloomer also heard of a new costume that promised to liberate women from the long skirts that were uncomfortable, inhibited movement and dangerous around household fires. The new idea was a short, full skirt, with so-called Turkish trousers underneath – full trousers, gathered at the waist and ankles. Her promotion of the costume brought her national renown, and eventually, her name became attached to the â€Å"Bloomer costume.† Temperance and Suffrage In 1853, Bloomer opposed a proposal by Stanton and her collaborator, Susan B. Anthony, that the New York Women’s Temperance Society be opened to men. Bloomer saw the work for temperance as particularly important a task for women. Succeeding in her stand, she became the corresponding secretary for the society. Amelia Bloomer lectured around New York in 1853 on temperance, and later in other states on women’s rights as well.  She sometimes spoke with others including Antoinette Brown Blackwell and Susan B. Anthony.  Horace Greeley came to hear her talk and reviewed her positively in his Tribune. Her unconventional costume helped attract larger crowds, but the attention on what she wore, she began to believe, detracted from her message. So she returned to conventional women’s attire. In December of 1853, Dexter and Amelia Bloomer moved to Ohio, to take up work with a reform newspaper, Western Home Visitor, with Dexter Bloomer as a part-owner. Amelia Bloomer wrote for both the new venture and for Lily, which was now published twice a month at four pages. The circulation of the Lily reached a peak of 6,000. Council Bluffs, Iowa In 1855, the Bloomers moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Amelia Bloomer realized that she could not publish from there, as they were far from a railroad, so she would not be able to distribute the paper. She sold the Lily to Mary Birdsall, under whom it soon failed once Amelia Bloomer’s participation ceased. In Council Bluffs, the Bloomers adopted two children and raised them.  In the Civil War, Amelia Bloomer’s father  was killed at Gettysburg. Amelia Bloomer worked in Council Bluffs on temperance and suffrage. She was an active member in the 1870s of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and wrote and lectured on temperance and prohibition. She also came to believe that the vote for women was key to winning prohibition. In 1869, she attended the American Equal Rights Association meeting in New York, which was followed by the splintering of the group into the National Woman Suffrage Association and the American Woman Suffrage Association. Amelia Bloomer helped found the Iowa Woman Suffrage Society in 1870. She was the first vice president and a year later assumed the presidency, serving until 1873. In the later 1870s, Bloomer had cut back considerably on her writing and lecturing and other public work.  She brought Lucy Stone, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to speak in Iowa. Question: Discuss about the Change In Behaviour Towards An Individual. Answer: This paper has been elaborated on the expectancy effects, especially the Change behaviours. It has shed light on how change in behaviour towards an individual can change his attitudes and way of behaving towards the very person. This topic has been chosen as it is one of the most aligned topics to my PDP output where I am mainly focusing on considering the view-points and opinions of others. Being part of a sales team, my role is to be accountable to achieving specific targeted annual quotas. It becomes very hard when I am not only answerable and responsible for my target but for the full team. As a person, I have been in the field where I have a track record of achievements. This has directed me towards leading the team to follow my path in conducting their activities with their clients. By doing so, it feels like dictating my team about doing the things they feel right. This also has an impact on the teams autonomy. The hypothesis of the paper is when giving my team members enough space and motivation for executing their styles and knowledge in order to perform their given task; they will be performing better than before. This will be highly beneficial for the entire team and the company both as the same time. We have conducted weekly team meeting to go through each individuals forecast. During our meeting we discuss about the opportunities, targets, challenges and closing date. I help the team in meeting their challenging by motivating them and by giving them examples from my own experience. For this experiment I will be focusing on my low performer employee, I will behave as I always do in the first meeting and note her response and subsequent behaviour during the week. I have aligned with my peer to attend the first meeting as an observer. The meeting went as usual discussing the deals, challenges and actions on how to move forward. During the meeting the high performer objected some of my advices and we discussed them through out the meeting hours and agreed on the actions. My low performer employee is as usual very quiet in the meeting and took the directions as directed to him. The rest of the week was normal- discussing about the targets and guiding the employees, and receiving emails or calls (unplanned interactions). Usually, my low performer employee avoids face to face interaction and only updates me through sending mails bout the actions I have been suggested to her. At the time of our weekly meeting, I asked the team members to share the closing dates and opportunity size and if there are any changes they noticed as compared to the last week. Finally, I stated that, I believe in your ability and knowledge. I do know that you know your clients better than me. I also believe that you all can overcome all your challenges in your own way towards success. The team was a bit concerned at the beginning till I left the meeting room. 10 minutes later, my low performer employee approached my desk to seek my advice. I responded to her by saying that Nothing can be fixed right now but you should remember that though you did not succeed this time, you will surely do in the next if you learn from your present mistakes and situations. Hence, this is not a complete loss. I also t old her to do it the way she believes is right because I believe that she has the required skills to make a difference. I noticed in the rest of the week that the team is opening up and I saw greater number of face to face interactions and calls from my employees and less emails than before. For the low performer employee, I started looking for her and asking about how things are moving and at the first couple of interactions she was cautious about sharing what she was doing and I kept telling her I am here always to guide you. So, never hesitate to approach me for my help. Within few days she started opening up and she was very happy to share her successes and the lessons she learnt and how she do it differently. Through changing my behaviour from the first meeting to the second meeting and the interactions in between, my observer peer and I noticed a notable improvement in two areas. Firstly is in the attitude and behaviour of the low performing employee. She became very active and started opening up to many channels to seek support. Secondly, the transparency was increased. I keep receiving updates calls instead of getting updates once in our weekly meeting. The change in my behaviours and attitudes towards my team members made them realise that I am very confident about their skills and ability. Also, my attitude made them learn that this is a safe environment to make mistakes. Mistakes can be fixed but the thing is to learn from our mistakes. On the other hand, they also wanted to prove to me back that they are accountable and credible. Moreover, when people find that the other person trusts them and their abilities, they become more assertive, conscious and wilfully stand for their promises. This automatically encourages them in improving their performance. This experiment was quite hard for me, as earlier i used to advice them to follow my path. I never gave them such a big space to prove their skills and ability. Therefore, I was always worried about failure. I used to think that what will happen if we fail in delivering our Sales commitment. So it was difficult for me to give the team more space to do things their way. Anyhow, I managed to try this experiment to change my behaviour, as i considered it to be very important and hence, witness the change in the performance and results. While doing the experiment I felt that my team and I had a better chemistry where the team also started to talk to me about their personal challenges and interests. More importantly, they began to tell me what I wanted to know without me having to ask them. I have decided to select the expectancy effect to boost the performance of all the team members and to be an effective leader. As I result of the experiment I expect the team to develop in three areas. Firstly, being very open and feel free to seek support. The second is to improve the autonomy of the team and thirdly, to create a sense of motivation among them. All the three areas I believe will personally help me in developing my leadership skills and professionally it will help me in driving greater results to the business.
